Homeopathy - Self-Help Kits
How you can help yourself using homeopathic remedies
Introduction
Homeopathic self help is best suited to simple and acute ailments. An acute illness is one where the symptoms are unpleasant and uncomfortable, but generally you would get better after a short time. Homeopathic treatment will often speed up this recovery time.
It is helpful to consult one of the many first aid books for homeopathy before treating yourself, please see our products and information area where suitable homeopathic books and first aid remedy kits are available. However, listed below as a handy guide are some helpful remedies with their key symptoms for particular acute conditions. Match your symptoms to the most suitable remedy.
Treating yourself for simple acute illnesses is possible, safely, as long as sensible guidelines are followed, primarily always monitor the patient's response, and if symptoms persist or worsen seek professional advice.
Bumps, bruises and physical injuries
Arnica
The first remedy to be taken after any physical injury. Its effects are more noticeable when
bruising or swelling from injury is present, and this will aid healing, reduce swelling and ease
pain.
Ledum
Can be used to aid healing and prevent sepsis of wounds caused by the skin being punctured for
example by a knife, nail, needle or splinter, and where wounds feel eased by a cold compress.
Hypericum
Should be tried where there is any nerve damage after injury, and pains are shooting or tearing.
Pain would also be worse if any pressure was applied to the affected area. Can be helpful when
used with ledum and to speed recovery after puncture wounds.
Upset stomach (with or without diarrhoea)
Arsenicum
This remedy is helpful in some cases of food poisoning where diarrhoea or vomiting is watery
and burning, any nausea is intense, and where the patient feels chilly, anxious or fearful.
Nux Vomica
The stomach will feel heavy and bloated with indigestion, heartburn and nausea. There can be some
irritability along with a desire for rich, highly seasoned food, which makes the condition worse.
Fever and high temperature
Belladonna
Very helpful in cases of fevers where the patient is very hot, with a radiating heat and has
"glassy" eyes, possibly with dilated pupils. The remedy can help to stabilise temperature and
ease symptoms.
Nose bleeds
Phosphorus
Where the blood is bright red and free flowing.
Hamamelis
Where the blood is darker in colour and to try if phosphorus isn't effective.
Arnica
Where the bleeding is as a result of injury, this remedy can be used alongside either phosphorus
or hamamelis.
Anxiety
Rescue Remedy
Helps to restore calmness, especially after a physical or emotional shock. This can also be useful
if there is anxiety and fear over a forthcoming event.
Aconite
The person would be anxious and very fearful (panicking) with restlessness and sleeplessness.
Avena Sativa
This is to help foster a general calmness and more relaxed state to aid sleep.
Colds and 'flu'
Gelsemium
The 'flu' type symptoms here are severe weakness and heavy aching of limbs, there will also be a
hot flushed feeling alternating with chilliness.
Pulsatilla
This is a very useful general remedy and it is helpful where catarrh is thick, yellow-green and
profuse, often with sneezing. The patient may also be weepy, want to be comforted, and better for
fresh air. Pulsatilla can also be helpful in cases of conjunctivitis.
Kali bic
Where catarrh is thick, stringy and green/yellow in colour. There would be a lot of sneezing and
the face could feel bruised.
Allium Cepa
Helpful where there is sneezing, watery catarrh (which makes the nose sore) watering eyes, and a
tickling cough.
Travel sickness
Petroleum/Cocculus/Tabaccum
A combination of three homeopathic remedies, which should ease most forms of motion sickness,
whether caused by road sea or air.
Argenticum Nitricum orAconite
Where there is a panic about, or fear of flying. Begin to take these remedies the day before
you are due to fly.
How to take the remedies
To take the remedy, tip one pill into the mouth (this can be done using a teaspoon if necessary), let it dissolve and don't eat, drink or smoke for 10 minutes before or after taking it. If there is immediate relief from a remedy, repeat it only when the symptoms reappear. Otherwise take one pill three times a day, reducing and stopping as health returns to normal, and the symptoms reduce.
If symptoms persist or worsen, seek professional advice.
More about homeopathy
Homeopathy is based on the practice of treating "like with like". This means that a substance which can cause symptoms in a healthy person, can also cure those same symptoms in a sick person. Homeopathy treats the whole person, including both emotional and physical aspects. The remedies are non toxic, cannot cause side effects and you cannot become addicted to them (this is because only a very minute amount of the active ingredient is used). A wide range of chronic and acute illnesses can be treated by using homeopathy, however recurring or long-term conditions should be treated by a qualified homeopath to ensure that the best and lasting results are obtained.
If you are already seeing a homeopath, do not take remedies without consulting with them as this may interfere with your treatment.
